This widespread dry salt pan is located south of the town of Kenhardt in the Northern Cape. Its surface is completely flat and is estimated to be about 57 km long and 11 km wide. It contains very little vegetation. After periods of rainfall, many birds flock here for water. Temperatures in this area can reach very high numbers – a daytime temperature of 40 degrees Celsius is not uncommon.

It is famous for land speed record attempts – in 1929 Sir Malcolm Campbell attempted to raise the land speed record but unfortunately failed. This is also the place where South African Johan Jacobs died in 2006 while travelling at approximately 500 miles per hour in his jet car which flipped.

This is a great kiting destination, other activities to enjoy here include parasailing, kite surfing and bird watching.
